A two-and-a-half-hour private airport transfer in South Florida costs roughly $500 to $625 one way. The same drive time from the North Carolina High Country to Charlotte Douglas costs significantly less with Ashe County Livery.
Every season we welcome South Florida families to Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Linville Ridge, Eagles Nest, Grandfather, Sugar Mountain and the surrounding High Country communities. And every season the same question comes up about the cost of the airport transfer to and from Charlotte.
It is a fair question. So rather than explain our own pricing, we asked the people who do this for a living in South Florida.
We asked a reputable Boca Raton black car company
We went directly to an established Boca Raton black car and limousine operator with a simple question: what do you charge a client for a long-distance airport transfer of roughly two and a half hours each way, in a sedan or luxury SUV, for two to three passengers?
Their client rate:
- $3.83 per mile in a sedan
- $4.55 per mile in a luxury SUV
- Gratuity included
- Surcharges added for early morning, late night, and international arrivals
A second South Florida operator in the same conversation prices the identical work at $100 per hour, garage to garage — meaning the clock runs from the moment the vehicle leaves its base until it returns.
The two Florida routes that match ours
The drive from Banner Elk to Charlotte Douglas is about 106 miles and takes roughly 2 hours 45 minutes. In South Florida terms, that is almost exactly:
- Miami International to Fort Pierce — 132 miles, about 2 hours 37 minutes
- Fort Lauderdale to Sebastian — 137 miles, about 2 hours 44 minutes
Here is what those Boca Raton rates produce on those routes:
| Route | Sedan | Luxury SUV |
|---|---|---|
| MIA to Fort Pierce (per-mile pricing) | $506 | $601 |
| FLL to Sebastian (per-mile pricing) | $526 | $625 |
| Either route (hourly, garage to garage) | $575 – $600 | $575 – $600 |
Those are South Florida prices, quoted by South Florida operators, for the same drive time our clients ask us to cover. Two different companies, two different pricing models, and they land in the same range: roughly $500 to $625 one way.
And those figures are for flat interstate driving in a dense market where a driver has a realistic chance of picking up a return fare. Our drivers cover mountain two-lane roads, elevation, weather, and — almost always — an empty return leg. If you want the full breakdown of what actually drives the cost of a mountain airport run, we walked through the real numbers in Is It Cheaper to Drive to Charlotte Airport or Book a Car? We Did the Math and in Self-Drive vs. Airport Transfer Service.
Our rate is significantly cheaper — here is how to see it
We are not going to publish a single number that may not fit your party, your pickup point or your flight time. What we will say plainly is that our High Country to Charlotte transfer comes in significantly below the $500 to $625 that South Florida operators charge for the same drive time.

“But in Florida we just take an Uber or a taxi”
In Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Boca, yes. Those markets have thousands of drivers circulating within a few miles of you at any hour, which is what makes on-demand pricing possible.
The High Country does not have that. There is no meaningful rideshare supply in Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, Linville or Beech Mountain, and there is no taxi fleet waiting at the bottom of the mountain.
Here is the part that catches visitors out, and we hear it from clients over and over: the app will accept your scheduled ride. It will show it confirmed in your trip list for days. Then, typically about fifteen minutes before your pickup window, you get the notification that there are no drivers in the area and the ride is cancelled. Accepting a reservation is not the same as having a driver, and in a market with almost no driver supply, the reservation is little more than a placeholder.
At 5 a.m., with a flight out of Charlotte and a two-and-a-half-hour drive ahead of you, that is not an inconvenience. That is a missed flight and a lost day of your vacation. We laid out the full version of this problem on Why Not Uber from the High Country, and for larger parties in Why Large Groups Should Skip Uber from Charlotte Airport.
A pre-arranged, chauffeured transfer is a fundamentally different product from an app-hailed car in a metro area. Comparing the two on price alone is not really a comparison at all.
“We could just rent a car”
You absolutely could, and for some trips that is the right call. But there are two things worth knowing before you count on it.
First, the practical one: one-way rentals out of the High Country are very hard to come by. The local counters are small operations serving a small market, and a one-way drop at Charlotte is generally not something they will do. Visitors regularly tell us they booked a one-way online and had it cancelled on them — sometimes not until they arrived to pick the car up. If your plan is to drive yourself to the airport and leave the car there, confirm it directly with the branch by phone well in advance.
Second, a rental is simply a different purchase. It means you drive, you park, you fuel, you navigate mountain roads in the dark or in weather, and you manage the vehicle for the length of your stay. Car rental is not a service we provide and it is not what we are pricing against. We provide a professional driver, a clean and maintained vehicle, a guaranteed pickup time, help with your luggage, and a ride where nobody in your party has to drive.
The point
When our South Florida clients weigh the cost of a High Country airport transfer, we would simply ask them to compare it to what the same trip costs at home — because the honest comparison is not to an app that may cancel on you, and it is not to a rental counter that may not take a one-way. It is to a black car operator driving the same distance to the same professional standard.
In South Florida, that trip runs $500 to $625. Ours does not. Request your quote here and see for yourself.
