Move-in weekend at Appalachian State University in Boone and Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk is exciting — and it is also one of the most logistically stressful travel weekends of the year, especially for families flying in from out of state.

Which Airport Should You Fly Into?
There is no single “Boone airport” — the High Country has no commercial service, so every arriving family picks a gateway and drives up the mountain.
- Charlotte Douglas (CLT) — about 2 hours to Boone, 2 hours 15 minutes to Banner Elk. The most flight options, the best international connections, and the route most families choose. US 321 through Blowing Rock is the standard approach.
- Piedmont Triad (GSO) — roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to Boone via US 421. Smaller, calmer terminal and often a faster door-to-door trip than CLT despite fewer flights.
- Asheville (AVL) — about 2 hours to Boone, and a pretty drive, but connections are limited and August fares run high.
- Tri-Cities (TRI) in Tennessee — roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to Boone, a good option for families connecting through Charlotte or Atlanta on regional carriers.
For most Lees-McRae families, CLT or GSO plus a private transfer to Banner Elk is the simplest combination. For App State families, GSO is the underrated pick.
Why the Mountain Drive Is Different
The last 45 minutes of the trip is what surprises first-time visitors. US 321 climbs steeply into Blowing Rock. NC 105 between Boone and Linville carries heavy August traffic. NC 184 into Banner Elk and Beech Mountain is a series of switchbacks. Add rain or evening fog on the Blue Ridge escarpment and an unfamiliar driver in a rental car is not having a relaxing afternoon.
