Choose-and-Cut Christmas Tree Farms Near Boone, West Jefferson and Banner Elk

Family choosing a Fraser fir at a mountain Christmas tree farm with a black SUV on the farm lane

Choose-and-cut Christmas tree farms are one of the best reasons to spend the holidays in the North Carolina mountains. Ashe, Watauga and Avery counties are the heart of the state’s Fraser fir country: the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association describes Ashe as the largest Christmas tree producing county in the United States, and Ashe County growers have supplied the official White House Christmas tree several times.

Walking the rows, picking a tree and watching it come down is a tradition for a lot of families who come up for Thanksgiving. Below are farms near Boone, West Jefferson and Banner Elk, with what each one says it offers. Most farms post their new season schedule in November, so check each farm’s current hours before you go.

Tips for a Smooth Tree Farm Outing

  • Go early on Thanksgiving weekend. The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving are the busiest days at most farms.
  • Dress for the field. Rows are often on steep, muddy or frosty hillsides. Boots and gloves help.
  • Measure first. Know your ceiling height and stand size. A tree that looks right in a field is bigger in a living room.
  • Plan the ride. Farm lanes are often gravel and parking is in a field, and most farms are on winding back roads.
  • Make it a day. Pair the farm with lunch in West Jefferson, Boone or Banner Elk, or with the Newland Christmas Tree Festival.
